DRW and Marex run an OTC swap on a tokenized S&P bond index — with the index's owners calling the shots
DRW and Marex completed a total return swap referencing a tokenized S&P iBoxx investment-grade bond index on the Canton Network, in a deal S&P and Kaiko call the first OTC derivative tied to a fully tokenized index.
Trading firms DRW and Marex have completed an over-the-counter total return swap referencing a tokenized version of S&P's iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index, according to The Block, which reported the deal on October 13. The trade ran on Derivnex's platform, built on the Canton Network. Kaiko tokenized the benchmark and supplied the official index values used to value the swap over its life.
S&P Dow Jones Indices and Kaiko described it as the first OTC derivative referencing a fully tokenized index on blockchain infrastructure — a "first" that, for now, rests on the word of the two companies whose product it is, not on independent verification.
The pitch, per S&P DJI, is that putting the benchmark, its licensing and the derivative's lifecycle on shared infrastructure could collapse a fragmented institutional workflow into one. Derivnex CEO George Harrington said the Canton setup gives counterparties "a common digital representation of a trade from affirmation through its full lifecycle" while keeping the transaction confidential between the parties.

The real-world read
Note who is standing where. S&P Global led the funding round that pushed Kaiko's Series B to $110 million — so S&P has a financial stake in the very partner that tokenized S&P's index. The "first fully tokenized index derivative" label comes from those two tied parties, and no neutral source corroborates it. Treat the superlative as marketing until someone outside the deal confirms it.
The quote from S&P DJI's Cameron Drinkwater — about extending its "credit franchise into on-chain finance" while "preserving trusted rigor and governance" — is promotional framing, not a result. What's conspicuously missing is the number that would make this more than a demo: the swap's notional size went undisclosed. One bilateral trade between two firms, on a benchmark its owner is commercially invested in distributing on-chain, is a proof of concept, not evidence of a market. This also rests on a single outlet's reporting; S&P DJI, Kaiko and Derivnex have not published primary announcements alongside it that would let the specifics be checked against source.
This is news coverage, not financial advice.
