CFTC chair sets Aug. 20 debut for Innovation Advisory Committee, with no roster or agenda attached

CFTC Chairman Mike Selig said on Aug. 18 that the agency's Innovation Advisory Committee meets for the first time on Aug. 20, offering no roster, agenda or public meeting notice.

CFTC Chairman Mike Selig said on Monday that the agency's Innovation Advisory Committee will hold its inaugural meeting on Thursday, Aug. 20, in Washington. The announcement came in a post from his @ChairmanSelig account, timestamped Aug. 18, 2026 at 4:31 p.m. UTC and republished by the agency's own @CFTC account.

The post is roughly two sentences of policy framing and a date. Selig wrote that "anti-crypto armies, doomers, and decelerationists" had for years "stifled innovation, regulating by enforcement and driving transformational technologies like blockchain, AI, and prediction markets overseas," and said the CFTC is "turning the page" as "innovators, builders, thinkers, and entrepreneurs descend upon Washington." An agency-produced video is attached.

That is the entirety of what has been made public through this channel. Selig did not name a single committee member, did not publish an agenda, did not say whether the meeting is open to the public or livestreamed, and did not link to a Federal Register notice — the mechanism under which federal advisory committees ordinarily announce meetings. No rule, no guidance and no enforcement position accompanies the announcement.

The real-world read

Three things are worth naming plainly.

First, this is a scheduling notice dressed as a policy turn. "Turning the page" and "charting a course" describe a meeting that has not happened, run by a committee whose members have not been identified. There is nothing yet to evaluate.

Second, the framing is doing heavy lifting. "Anti-crypto armies, doomers, and decelerationists" is campaign language from a sitting regulator, aimed at unnamed predecessors, with no specific enforcement action cited as the thing that went wrong. The claim that US policy drove blockchain, AI and prediction markets "overseas" is asserted, not evidenced — no data, no companies, no jurisdictions.

Third, the attached video is agency promotional material, not a document. Treat it as such. The replies beneath the post — retail cheerleading, a plug for two unrelated accounts, one commenter asking what the agency intends to do about the existing derivatives book — are audience noise and carry no factual weight.

The tell for Thursday is the membership list. An advisory committee's roster is the policy; the press release is not.

Opinion, and whose

Every characterization above of past US regulation as obstructive is Selig's, stated in his own post. Cleartext takes no position on whether it is accurate. No forecast about what the committee will produce is offered here, because nothing in the announcement supports one.
