Cardano Foundation's .ada bid clears ICANN's first gate, but a working domain is years off

The Cardano Foundation says its application for the .ada top-level domain cleared ICANN's first hurdle on 7 October, with any live domain still years away — delegation is expected between 2028 and 2030.

The Cardano Foundation said on 8 October that its application for a .ada top-level domain has advanced to the next phase of ICANN's New Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) Program. According to the Foundation's blog, ICANN confirmed the step on "Reveal Day," 7 October, by publishing the list of applications moving forward. The announcement was timed to the TOKEN2049 conference.

This is the first time ICANN has opened applications for new top-level domains — the string after the final dot, such as .org or .xyz — since 2012. The Foundation says it pursued .ada after a Cardano Governance Action passed with roughly 75% community support.

Clearing Reveal Day is an early milestone, not approval. The Foundation says ICANN will next evaluate .ada's technical compliance and the Foundation's financial and operational readiness to run the registry. By its own account, delegation of domains in this round is expected between 2028 and 2030, depending on each application's progress — meaning no usable .ada address exists yet or is close to existing.

The Foundation frames .ada as a bridge between the traditional internet and Web3, citing possible uses such as simplified wallet addresses, integration with its Veridian decentralized-identity work, and "domain tokenization." Those are described as examples of what the domain could enable, not shipped features.

Key facts

  • ICANN published its "Reveal Day" list of advancing applications on 7 October 2026; the Foundation announced .ada's inclusion on 8 October (Cardano Foundation blog).
  • The application stems from a Cardano Governance Action that passed with ~75% community support (Cardano Foundation blog).
  • Delegation of new domains in this round is expected 2028–2030 (Cardano Foundation blog).
  • This is ICANN's first new-gTLD application window since 2012 (Cardano Foundation blog).
  • Other crypto-linked strings in the round include .sol, .ethereum, .btc and .bitcoin; non-crypto applicants named include OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic (Cardano Foundation blog).

The real-world read

The only account here is the Foundation's own blog post — this is the applicant describing its own application, and the language ("unlock possibilities," "boosting trust and credibility") is promotional. Treat it as the Foundation's framing, not independent confirmation.

What's advancing is an application, not a domain. "Reveal Day" means ICANN published the list of submissions; it does not mean .ada passed technical or financial review, and the Foundation itself puts any delegation three to five years out. The listed use cases — tokenized domains, wallet-address shortcuts, Veridian integration — are hypotheticals the Foundation says .ada "could" enable, with no product attached.

ICANN hasn't independently confirmed .ada's status here beyond the published list, and the post doesn't disclose what the application cost or who funds the registry's operating readiness. Note too that applying doesn't guarantee exclusivity or approval: strings can draw competing bids or objections, a risk the post doesn't address.

This is news coverage, not financial advice.
