BitMine's ether pile nears 5% of all ETH as Tom Lee pins the rally on a 50/50 regulatory bet

BitMine bought about 42,197 ether for roughly $73–74 million last week, pushing its treasury to 5.74 million ETH — near 5% of all Ethereum — as chairman Tom Lee credited a coin-flip Clarity Act bet for ether's relative strength.

BitMine Immersion Technologies bought roughly 42,197 ether last week and now holds 5.74 million ETH, or about 4.8% of Ethereum's total supply, according to a company statement dated Monday, July 6, reported by both The Block and Decrypt. That makes BitMine the largest corporate holder of ether and the second-largest crypto treasury company of any kind, behind Michael Saylor's Strategy and its 847,363 bitcoin.

The two outlets differ slightly on the price tag for last week's purchase: The Block put it at "roughly $74 million," Decrypt at "$73 million." The gap is almost entirely a matter of which ether price you use — Decrypt's page showed ETH at $1,751.69, The Block quoted it "near $1,770" at publication, and 42,197 ETH times those figures lands between about $73.9 million and $74.7 million. Neither number is disputed; they're the same trade priced minutes apart.

The holdings, as the company reports them. BitMine's Monday statement claimed total crypto and cash of $11.1 billion as of June 28, built from an ether stake valued at $1,800 per coin, 206 bitcoin, $527 million in cash and marketable securities, and equity stakes in Beast Industries and Eightco Holdings. Note the valuation date and price: the $11.1 billion figure marks ether at $1,800, above the ~$1,752–$1,770 the token was actually trading at when the disclosure landed on July 6, so the current mark is somewhat lower than the headline number.

The staking machinery. BitMine says it has staked 4,879,157 ETH — about 85% of its total ether — through what it brands MAVAN, its "Made in America Validator Network." The company's own validators produced a seven-day annualized yield of 2.68%, per Lee. Current annualized staking revenue runs at $235 million, and BitMine projects that figure rising to $277 million "at full deployment" across MAVAN and its staking partners. That $277 million is a company projection, not a booked result.

The narrative Lee is selling. Chairman Tom Lee tied ether's recent outperformance against bitcoin to regulatory sentiment, specifically prediction-market pricing that put passage of the Clarity Act at "about 50% odds, the highest in two weeks." "We believe regulatory clarity is an important milestone, enabling crypto, particularly smart contract platforms like Ethereum, to benefit," Lee said. The "strength" he's describing is relative: The Block's price page showed ether up 10% over the past month against bitcoin's roughly 2% rise.

The backdrop matters. These are not boom prices. BitMine is accumulating ether at levels far below prior highs, and the disclosure sits alongside a run of downbeat market headlines the same day — Strategy selling 3,588 bitcoin for $216 million with its total stack "still underwater," and Bernstein keeping an "ambitious" $150,000 year-end bitcoin target "despite a 54% drawdown." BitMine's shares (BMNR) were up more than 3% after the July 6 disclosure, and the company entered the Russell 1000 large-cap index on June 26 — a move Lee expects will broaden its institutional shareholder base.

Key facts

  • Last week's buy: ~42,197 ETH, ~$73M (Decrypt) to ~$74M (The Block) — difference driven by ether price used.
  • Total ether treasury: 5.74 million ETH, ~4.8% of Ethereum's supply — largest corporate ether holder (The Block, Decrypt, citing BitMine's statement).
  • Reported total holdings: $11.1 billion as of June 28 — ether marked at $1,800, plus 206 BTC, $527M cash/securities, and equity in Beast Industries and Eightco (BitMine statement via The Block).
  • Staked: 4,879,157 ETH (~85% of holdings) via MAVAN; own-validator seven-day annualized yield 2.68% (Lee).
  • Staking revenue: $235M annualized now; $277M projected "at full deployment" (BitMine release).
  • Ether price: $1,751.69 (Decrypt) to ~$1,770 (The Block); ETH +10% vs BTC +2% over the past month (The Block price page).
  • Clarity Act odds: ~50%, "highest in two weeks" per prediction markets (Lee).
  • Strategy, for contrast: sold 3,588 BTC for $216M last week; holds 847,363 BTC (The Block).
  • BMNR: joined Russell 1000 on June 26; shares +3% after the disclosure (The Block).

The real-world read

Nearly every hard number here originates with BitMine itself — the Monday statement is the primary source both outlets are working from, so treat holdings, yields, and the $277 million projection as figures from an interested party touting its own book, not independently verified data. On-chain confirmation of the wallet totals isn't in either source.

The causal story is the softest part. Lee is the chairman of a company whose entire thesis is that ether goes up, explaining why ether went up — by pointing to a prediction market sitting at "about 50%." That's a coin flip. Calling it "the highest in two weeks" dresses a 50/50 bet as momentum; it's also, by definition, a market that gives the Clarity Act even odds of not passing. And the "strength" being explained is a one-month relative move — ether beating bitcoin by eight points while both trade at heavily depressed levels. Outperforming a falling asset is not the same as strength, and the surrounding same-day headlines (Strategy underwater, Bernstein nursing a 54% drawdown) make clear which way the broader tape is pointing.

Watch the valuation, too. The $11.1 billion topline marks ether at $1,800, but the token was changing hands closer to $1,752–$1,770 when the release dropped — so the real-time mark is lower than the number in the press materials, and the snapshot is a week stale (June 28). "MAVAN" and "Made in America Validator Network" are branding: patriotic packaging around ordinary Ethereum validators. And a 2.68% staking yield is thin — a reminder that the treasury's engine is modest carry, not a high return. What goes conspicuously unmentioned is what BitMine is funding these purchases with and at what cost to shareholders; a treasury company accumulating into weakness is buying at better prices, but the dilution or leverage behind the buying isn't in these sources.

Opinion, and whose

  • Tom Lee (BitMine chairman): regulatory clarity is "an important milestone" that would let smart-contract platforms like Ethereum benefit, and improving Clarity Act odds explain ether's recent gains against bitcoin. This is a forecast-tinged read from the company's most interested party.
  • Tom Lee, again: expects Russell 1000 inclusion to broaden BitMine's institutional shareholder base — a projection, not a result.
  • BitMine (company): projects $277 million in annualized staking rewards "at full deployment" — a forward estimate.
  • Bernstein (via The Block's separate coverage): maintains a $150,000 year-end bitcoin target despite a 54% drawdown, framing it as "ambitious." Cited here only as market context.

The Block discloses Foresight Ventures as majority investor and Bitget as an anchor LP of that fund — a conflict of interest to note, though not specific to this story.
