Bitcoin's long-term holders are capitulating, but analysts stop short of calling a bottom
Glassnode data cited by The Block shows bitcoin has traded below key on-chain value levels for five months as long-term holders sell at the fastest pace since December 2022, with no confirmed bottom.
Bitcoin has now spent five straight months below both its True Market Mean and its Short-Term Holder Cost Basis — two on-chain valuation lines that analysts treat as deep-value territory — and the investors bailing hardest are the ones who bought near the last cycle top, according to a Glassnode on-chain report cited by The Block on July 9.
The headline figure: long-term holder loss realization recently peaked at roughly $280 million per day, the highest since December 2022, and now accounts for 43% of all realized value moving on-chain, up from 15% in early February. Glassnode frames this cohort as the single largest source of selling pressure — each attempted rally is met with fresh distribution, which is why price keeps failing at the top of its range.
Institutional demand hasn't stepped in to absorb it. The 30-day average of spot bitcoin ETF net flows turned negative in mid-May, bottomed near -$193 million/day in early June, and has since eased to about -$89 million/day. Spot bitcoin ETFs saw $84.86 million in net outflows on July 8 (SoSoValue). QCP Capital noted flows swung from -$691.7 million on June 25 to positive $223.5 million (July 2) and $265.7 million (July 6), led by IBIT, FBTC and ARKB — but said more positive sessions are needed to confirm a durable recovery. Daily ETF volume of $650m–$950m sits ~80% below October 2025's $4.4 billion peak.
The bottoming read collided with a geopolitical shock: Trump declared the U.S.–Iran ceasefire "over" Wednesday after Iranian strikes in the Strait of Hormuz, and bitcoin pared a 9.4% weekly gain to about 5%, tracking risk assets lower alongside the S&P 500 and Euro Stoxx.

The real-world read
The tension in the data cuts against a clean bottom call, and Glassnode says so directly: capitulation hasn't cooled the way it did after the cycle's first spike, and confirmation "has not arrived." Note who's talking. Glassnode sells on-chain analytics, and "bottom building in progress" is a house-favorable framing — the firm still lists further cooling, flow stabilization and a reclaimed True Market Mean as unmet preconditions. The bullish tells are thin: QCP's own positive-flow sessions total three days against weeks of outflows, and QCP simultaneously flags thinning buffers — Strategy sold bitcoin for the first time to fund dividends, and private-credit funds breached quarterly redemption gates. Rate-hike odds near 87% (Capital.com's Kyle Rodda) are a headwind, not a floor.
Opinion, and whose
Glassnode: conditions for a bottom are "in place" but unconfirmed. QCP Capital: "no monetary cushion coming" — asks "where does the first crack show?" Capital.com's Daniela Hathorn: low-$60,000s is key support, mid-$60,000s the first resistance. None of this is a forecast of price.
