UBS reports a 24-fold jump in IBIT call options — with no strikes, no expirations, and no explanation

UBS disclosed call options on 1.95 million BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust shares as of June 30, up from 80,000 three months earlier, though its outright stake remains below December's level.

UBS disclosed a sharp increase in options exposure tied to BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust in its second-quarter US holdings filing, reported this week by CoinDesk, which cited the bank's own quarterly filing alongside its Q1 and Q4 2025 disclosures.

As of June 30, the Swiss bank reported call options representing 1.95 million underlying IBIT shares, against 80,000 at the end of March — a roughly 24-fold increase. Over the same three months, put options fell about 53%, from 303,300 underlying shares to 143,300. The outright stake rose about 12%, from 364,371 shares to 407,890, valued at roughly $13.6 million.

The filing carries no strike prices and no expiration dates, which makes the bank's net directional position impossible to derive from the disclosure alone. Nor does it say what drove the change. CoinDesk noted the positions could reflect dealer hedging, market-making, discretionary client portfolios or proprietary risk — the filing distinguishes none of them.

Context that the quarter-over-quarter comparison obscures: UBS held 548,614 IBIT shares at the end of 2025. The 407,890 shares reported for June 30 are about 26% below that. The bank has separately been preparing to offer bitcoin and ether trading to select private banking clients in Switzerland, per CoinDesk, though the filing does not connect that work to the options figures.

Key facts

  • Calls on 1.95M underlying IBIT shares as of June 30, vs. 80,000 on March 31 (UBS Q2 filing, via CoinDesk)
  • Puts on 143,300 underlying shares, down ~53% from 303,300 (same filings)
  • Direct holding 407,890 shares, ~$13.6M, up ~12% from 364,371 (Q2 and Q1 filings, via CoinDesk)
  • Still below 548,614 shares held at end-2025 (Q4 2025 filing, via CoinDesk)
  • UBS manages over $7 trillion in assets (CoinDesk)

The real-world read

"Ramps up its Bitcoin exposure" is CoinDesk's framing, not the filing's. A quarterly holdings report lists notional underlying shares; without strikes or expirations, 1.95 million shares of calls is compatible with a directional bet, a client-facing hedge, or inventory a market-maker is carrying against offsetting risk. The falling put count is read as bullish only if you assume the two books are unrelated — nothing disclosed establishes that.

Two things go unmentioned in the bullish read. The direct position is down roughly a quarter from December, so the 12% quarterly gain is a bounce, not a build. And $13.6 million against more than $7 trillion under management is about two ten-thousandths of a percent — a rounding line, not a treasury decision. The data is also six weeks stale by disclosure date.

Opinion, and whose

None on the record here. CoinDesk supplied the "massive" characterization; UBS made no statement about intent, and no analyst is quoted. Anything about what the bank believes about bitcoin is inference.
