Trump Media moves 2,628 BTC to Crypto.com, says it wasn't a sale

Wallets tagged to Trump Media sent 2,628 BTC worth roughly $165 million to Crypto.com on Saturday; the company says the coins were moved, not sold.

Wallets publicly attributed to Trump Media and Technology Group moved 2,628 bitcoin — about $165 million at Sunday's prices — to Crypto.com on Saturday in two on-chain transactions, according to The Block, which cited the on-chain record and analytics firm Lookonchain's flag of the movement.

Lookonchain, posting on X, characterized the transfers as a likely sale. A Trump Media spokesperson told The Block after publication that the bitcoin was transferred to Crypto.com but not sold — the same explanation the company gave for a similar transfer in May. The on-chain data itself establishes only the movement of coins to an exchange address, not what happened to them afterward.

The distinction matters because Crypto.com is not just an exchange here. It is one of two custodians Trump Media named when it set up its bitcoin treasury strategy in May 2025, alongside Anchorage Digital. Coins arriving at a custodian's address are consistent with either a sale or a routine internal move.

After the transfers, the tagged wallets hold roughly 4,261 BTC, worth about $268 million with bitcoin trading near $63,065 on Sunday morning, per The Block's price data. That is close to the 4,260.73 BTC Trump Media reported in its first-quarter 10-Q as collateral for its convertible notes as of March 31. The filing states the company is "restricted from distributing or withdrawing" that bitcoin subject to loan indenture requirements, with restrictions lifted no later than the notes' maturity on May 29, 2028. The near-match is not proof the remaining balance is the pledged collateral, nor that the tagged addresses capture all of the company's holdings.

Key facts

  • 2,628 BTC (~$165M) moved to Crypto.com on Saturday across two transactions — on-chain data via Lookonchain, reported by The Block
  • Remaining tagged balance: 4,261 BTC ($268M) — The Block
  • 4,260.73 BTC pledged as convertible-note collateral as of March 31; restricted until no later than May 29, 2028 — Trump Media Q1 2026 10-Q
  • Custodians since May 2025: Crypto.com and Anchorage Digital — The Block
  • BTC dipped below $63,000, traded near $63,065 Sunday — The Block's price page
  • DJT closed Friday at $9.86 (-5.0%), then $9.78 after hours (-0.8%) — Yahoo Finance data cited by The Block

The real-world read

Two things are unverifiable right now, and both cut against a clean story. The company's denial cannot be checked from the chain, and Lookonchain's "likely sale" is an inference, not a finding — neither claim is settled until a filing says so. Note also who is speaking: an unnamed spokesperson, offering a denial that is identical to the one issued in May.

The arithmetic is the more interesting part. If the ~4,261 BTC left behind is the pledged collateral, then what just moved was the unencumbered portion — and there is nothing publicly visible left that the company is free to touch before 2028 without lender sign-off.

Context that doesn't appear in any denial: Trump Media withdrew its Truth Social Bitcoin ETF and Bitcoin & Ethereum ETF applications in May, its shares fell 5% Friday, and it is currently selling Truth API feed access for up to $100,000 a month — an offering Senators Elizabeth Warren and Adam Schiff called "an outrageous abuse of the President's office for his personal benefit" in a letter to the SEC. Separately, Citadel Securities recently invested $400 million in Crypto.com at a $20 billion valuation, per earlier Block reporting.

Opinion, and whose

  • Lookonchain (on-chain analytics firm, via X): the transfers were probably a sale. Its own data doesn't distinguish sale from custody transfer.
  • Trump Media spokesperson: transferred, not sold. An interested party, unnamed, unverifiable until the next filing.
  • Sens. Warren and Schiff: the Truth API is an abuse of office — a political claim, not an adjudicated one.
