SNS to pause .sol registrations on August 17, snapshot to decide who gets a matching domain in the new registry

Solana Name Service said on August 13 that .sol registrations will pause on August 17, after which it will take an on-chain snapshot of existing domains to determine eligibility for matching names in a new registry built on SRS. The announcement came in a thread from the @sns account, reposted by Solana's main @solana account. It is the project's own account describing its own migration; no independent confirmation of the timeline has surfaced.

Under the plan SNS laid out, domains registered before the August 17 pause "are expected to be included" in the snapshot and eligible for a matching new .sol. The snapshot captures each domain's on-chain state at that moment, and SNS says what happens afterwards does not change eligibility.

Delivery follows the state at snapshot time. Domains listed on the SNS marketplace or Magic Eden go to the wallet that listed them — SNS says there is no need to delist. Domains held in a sub-registrar go to the sub-registrar owner. Tokenized-but-unlisted domains, and everything else, go to the holding wallet. SNS says eligible wallets should receive the matching names on-chain in late September to early October, that no claim is required, and that a checker will go live at migration.sns.id once the snapshot is finalized.

Existing domains stay put and continue as .sns, retaining ownership, records, primary-domain settings and subdomains. Subdomains stay attached to the .sns parent and are not eligible for matching .sol subdomains. Delivery does not mean the new name works immediately: SNS says wallet and app support for SRS-based .sol will roll out "progressively." The project also warned there is no claim process and that it will never ask holders to sign a transaction or pay a fee, and pointed to a migration FAQ at sns.id.

The real-world read

Almost every commitment here is hedged. Registrations are "expected to" pause; domains are "expected to be" included; delivery is "expected" in a five-week window. That is a plan, not a guarantee, and the wording is the project's own.

The exclusions clause is the part worth reading twice: SNS reserves the right to withhold a matching domain where one has been "credibly reported in connection with a scam or hack." Who judges credibility, on what evidence, and whether there is any appeal — the announcement doesn't say.

Conspicuously absent: any explanation of why the migration is happening, what SRS changes about control of the registry, how many domains are in scope, whether the new registry carries fees or renewals, and when — or whether — new .sol registrations reopen. The framing that your domain "continues as .sns" is doing quiet work: holders keep the asset, but under a different top-level name than the one they bought.

The marketplace rule also has an edge case SNS glosses over. Because the listing wallet receives the new domain, anyone with a live listing across the snapshot could sell the .sns while keeping the matching .sol. Buyers on August 17 should know which one they are getting.

Opinion, and whose

The takes circulating are from unaffiliated X accounts, not analysts. @stakecraft argued ENS "set a precedent here in Nov 2021 where snapshot timing genuinely caught holders off guard" and called SNS's pre-announced date the better approach — that historical comparison is their characterisation and is not independently verified here. @AiFlippa said they were "curious to see how seamless it may or may not be." @salar_bloch_ said the upgrade "could bring major changes." One reply asked whether the migration includes an airdrop; SNS has said nothing about a token, and the thread's scam warning cuts directly against that reading.
