Robinhood turns on UK crypto via Bitstamp, with a "zero-fee" label that has an FX fee attached

Robinhood switched on crypto trading for eligible UK customers this week, routing more than 50 tokens through FCA-registered Bitstamp UK, as its own crypto revenue fell 38% year over year and prediction markets overtook it.

Robinhood began rolling out cryptocurrency trading to eligible UK customers this week, putting more than 50 tokens inside the same app that already holds its stocks and shares ISA, equities, options and futures products. The Block, citing a statement shared with it by the company, and CoinDesk, reporting the same announcement, both describe the rollout as starting this week and both name the same plumbing: trades are executed through Bitstamp, the exchange Robinhood bought last year for $200 million.

The regulated entity matters more than the app skin. Crypto trading is provided by Bitstamp UK Ltd, registered with the Financial Conduct Authority as a crypto asset service provider, according to The Block. Robinhood also disclosed — and The Block reported, while CoinDesk did not — that crypto held through Bitstamp UK is covered by neither the Financial Services Compensation Scheme nor the Financial Ombudsman Service. That is the standard position for FCA-registered crypto firms rather than anything unusual to Robinhood, but it is the single most consequential line in the announcement for a retail customer who is being invited to hold crypto next to ISA-wrapped equities in one interface.

The fee structure, precisely

Robinhood said the service launches with zero trading fees, no account maintenance fees and no custody fees, per The Block. CoinDesk's headline treatment — "no-fee crypto trading" — reflects the company's framing.

The Block carried the qualifier: UK customers pay a 0.1% foreign exchange fee, rising to 0.3% for certain weekend conversions. Because the assets are priced in dollars and the customers are in sterling, that conversion charge is not an edge case; it is the transaction. Neither outlet reported a disclosed spread, and Robinhood has not published one.

That gap sits awkwardly against the company's own pitch. "Our new product provides a transparent, low-cost alternative to many incumbent U.K. platforms, which often rely on opaque pricing structures and apply wide spreads that can erode customers' returns," Robinhood said in a statement quoted by CoinDesk. A firm making transparency the argument has not yet said what its own spread is.

Named launch assets include BTC, ETH, XRP and HYPE, per both outlets. The full list of "more than 50" was not published.

Key facts

  • More than 50 crypto assets available to eligible UK customers, rolling out this week — The Block, CoinDesk
  • Executed through Bitstamp UK Ltd, an FCA-registered crypto asset service provider; not covered by FSCS or the Financial Ombudsman Service — The Block
  • Robinhood acquired Bitstamp for $200 million; The Block says last year, CoinDesk says 2025
  • Zero trading, account maintenance and custody fees; 0.1% FX fee, rising to 0.3% on certain weekend conversions — The Block
  • Q2 crypto transaction revenue of $100 million, down 38% year over year, reported July 29 — The Block
  • Q2 prediction markets revenue of $156 million, exceeding crypto revenue for the first time — The Block
  • Q2 total net revenue $1.31 billion, up 32% year over year; net income $573 million, up 48% on Q2 2025 — The Block
  • Robinhood Chain, an Arbitrum-based layer 2, launched July 1; company-reported figures of more than $18 billion in DEX volume and more than $840 million in total value locked — The Block

The AI layer

Both outlets report the launch includes "Robinhood Cortex Digests for Crypto," a generative AI widget that ingests breaking news, market data, technical indicators and what Robinhood calls its proprietary insights, then explains in plain language what is moving an individual asset's price. Robinhood says it is meant to help investors make more informed decisions.

Neither outlet reported any accuracy benchmark, error rate, hallucination policy, or disclosure of what the "proprietary insights" input actually consists of. The feature narrates price moves inside an app whose economics improve when customers trade.

The real-world read

The timing is the story. Robinhood is expanding crypto into a new retail market in the same quarter its crypto business shrank. Crypto transaction revenue was $100 million in Q2, down 38% from a year earlier, while prediction markets brought in $156 million and passed crypto for the first time, per The Block's account of the July 29 earnings report. The UK launch is being presented as momentum; the underlying line item is in decline, and the growth engine at Robinhood right now is event contracts, not tokens.

"Zero fees" is doing work. Every fee named as zero is a fee Robinhood is choosing not to charge on top of a conversion it does charge for. The 0.1% FX fee — 0.3% on some weekend conversions — is the price. CoinDesk's write-up mentions no fee at all; The Block's does. A reader who saw only one of the two would come away with a materially different picture of the cost.

Transparency claim, undisclosed spread. Robinhood's statement attacks incumbents for "opaque pricing structures" and "wide spreads." No spread disclosure appears in either report. Attacking opacity while withholding the number is the oldest move in retail brokerage marketing, and it should be discounted until Robinhood publishes it.

Company-supplied metrics, no independent check. The Robinhood Chain figures — $18 billion in DEX volume, $840 million TVL since July 1, and CEO Vlad Tenev's claim it is the fastest EVM-compatible chain to 100 million transactions — all originate with Robinhood. DEX volume and transaction counts on a chain the sponsor controls the incentives for are among the easiest metrics in crypto to inflate; neither outlet points to an independent explorer or dashboard. CoinDesk goes further and calls Robinhood Chain "highly popular" in its own voice, with no cited basis. That is the company's adjective, not a finding.

The consumer-protection line is buried. The FSCS and Ombudsman exclusion appears in The Block and not in CoinDesk. In a launch whose entire selling point is that crypto now sits beside FSCS-relevant ISA and equities products in one app, the fact that one of those pots has no compensation backstop deserves more prominence than a late paragraph.

A date that doesn't line up. CoinDesk's story says Robinhood announced the product "on Monday" — 10 August — but its URL is dated 7 August. The Block's report is timestamped 10 August. The likely explanation is a slug or embargo artifact, but the discrepancy is on the record.

Opinion, and whose

  • Jordan Sinclair, President of Robinhood UK Ltd and GM of Bitstamp UK Ltd: "A new wave of UK investors sees digital assets as an important part of a diversified portfolio," and the launch is "another major step toward becoming the all-in-one investment platform for the UK." This is the executive's characterisation of UK retail demand; no supporting survey or flow data was cited.
  • Robinhood (corporate statement, via CoinDesk): its product is a "transparent, low-cost alternative" to UK incumbents with "opaque pricing." Company marketing.
  • Shiv Verma, Robinhood CFO, on the Q2 results: "We delivered record revenues and drove new highs across equity, option, and event contract volumes, as we continue to win market share." Note which volumes he lists — crypto is not among them.
  • Vlad Tenev, CEO: Robinhood Chain is the fastest EVM-compatible chain to reach 100 million transactions. Unverified company claim.

Based on a company statement shared with The Block. The Block discloses that Foresight Ventures has been its majority investor since November 2023 and that Bitget is an anchor LP of Foresight; it states it operates independently.
  • CoinDesk (dated 7 August 2026, describing a Monday announcement) — the Robinhood corporate quote on "opaque pricing," the Cortex Digests description, and the Sinclair quote. Reports no fee detail and no consumer-protection caveat, and characterises Robinhood Chain as "highly popular" without support.
