Robinhood built a chain for tokenized stocks. Two weeks in, memecoins own it

Robinhood Chain, an Ethereum layer-2 launched July 1 to host tokenized stocks, has drawn heavy early traffic driven mostly by memecoins, with real-world assets making up roughly $13 million of activity.

Robinhood Chain, an Ethereum layer-2 the trading app launched on July 1 to host tokenized equities and other real-world assets (RWAs), has become one of crypto's busiest new networks. What it is not, so far, is what it was built for.

Per data reviewed by CoinDesk, tokenized real-world assets account for just $12.81 million of activity on the chain — $10.68 million of that in stocks, the rest split across commodities, tokenized ETFs and a $410,000 sliver of U.S. Treasuries, as of Monday morning. By Dune Analytics' breakdown, RWAs are 4.1% of value locked, behind asset management (40.5%), lending (38.3%) and spot exchanges (11.9%).

Dominating instead: memecoins and stablecoins. CASHCAT — named after Robinhood's former cash-cat mascot — has risen 2,158% over seven days to a $156 million market cap, per CoinDesk, and has spawned a cluster of Robinhood-themed tokens (Cash Dog in Hood, Little John, Hoodrat) via a launchpad called NOXA.fun. Global Dollar (USDG), the Paxos-led stablecoin Robinhood helped found, holds about $200 million of the roughly $299 million in stablecoins on the chain.

The chain is built on Arbitrum's Orbit stack, settles on Ethereum and pays fees in ether at a fraction of a cent per transaction. Its Stock Tokens — onchain versions of names like Nvidia and Apple — are structured as tokenized debt securities and barred to U.S. persons. Uniswap, Chainlink and Morpho were integrated at launch.

Key facts

  • Launched July 1 as an Ethereum L2 on Arbitrum Orbit (CoinDesk).
  • TVL cited two ways: ~$135 million, up 7x from $17 million on July 3 (DefiLlama); the chain also reports ~$312 million locked and a $480 million total asset market cap as of Monday morning (CoinDesk).
  • RWAs: $12.81 million total; stocks $10.68 million; Treasuries $410,000 (CoinDesk).
  • CASHCAT: +2,158% in 7 days, ~$156 million market cap (CoinDesk).
  • ~800,000 lifetime addresses; 3.6 million transactions in a day; $838 million 24-hour DEX volume; $3.1 billion weekly DEX volume (CoinDesk, Token Terminal).

The real-world read

Note the mixed metrics: CoinDesk reports both a ~$135 million DefiLlama TVL and a ~$312 million figure for tokens locked — different measures, and worth watching which one Robinhood leans on in its own marketing.

The louder tell is the CEO. On July 2, Vlad Tenev told CNBC that assets without utility "do not serve a lasting purpose" and that tokenized RWAs were crypto's durable direction. Six days later, as CASHCAT climbed, he posted that the chain "works great for memes too" — then followed the token's account. That's a founder quietly leaning into the speculation his own thesis dismissed.

The pattern rhymes with Coinbase's Base in 2023: speculation fills a chain first, durable apps arrive later — if they arrive. Memecoin traders aren't loyal to any chain, so today's traffic may not convert into the tokenized-equity users Robinhood is courting. Whether RWAs grow past ~$13 million as the memes fade is the open question.

Opinion, and whose

Bernstein flagged Robinhood Chain's rise into the top five by DEX volume (via CoinDesk). Robinhood's own framing — a "regulated venue" where RWAs plug into DeFi — is the company's pitch, not an established outcome; the current composition of activity undercuts it.
