Hunter Biden's LAPTOP token debuts near $1.6B, then falls 98% inside an hour
Hunter Biden's LAPTOP memecoin peaked at $190.81 within two minutes of its Base debut on September 9, then fell about 98% to under $4 inside an hour, with onchain data showing tokens sent to market makers days before trading opened.
A memecoin named for Hunter Biden's laptop opened for trading on Base on Wednesday, September 9, spiked to $190.81 within two minutes, and collapsed to as low as $3.70 less than an hour later — a drop of roughly 98% from peak, according to CoinDesk, citing CoinMarketCap and blockchain-intelligence firm Arkham.
An hour after the open, LAPTOP changed hands at $4.77. On a circulating supply of 350 million tokens that works out to a market cap near $1.6 billion, with a fully diluted valuation around $4.8 billion — backed by pooled liquidity of just $2.5 million, per CoinMarketCap. Arkham's read of the first minutes was more extreme still: it put fully diluted valuation as high as $144 billion against a liquidity pool holding $48,000. First-hour volume across 314 pairs was about $19 million, concentrated in an Aerodrome Slipstream USDC pool (46.8% of turnover) and Uniswap v4 on Base.
The onchain record shows movement before the public could trade. A multisig Arkham tags as a Laptop Token wallet received 100 million LAPTOP — a tenth of supply — seven days before launch and has since moved about 42.5 million, per BaseScan. Market maker GSR received 15.5 million tokens four days ahead of the open via an intermediary and has been distributing since; Wintermute holds roughly 1.8 million. The single largest transfer, 14.5 million tokens, went to an unlabelled address about two hours before trading began; neither Arkham nor BaseScan identifies the recipient. CoinDesk says it has contacted GSR for comment.
The token is named for the computer Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, left at a Delaware repair shop in 2019. Its tokenomics set aside 20% of supply for liquidity and operations, and its burn schedule ties 30 outcomes to conditions — one being whether LAPTOP's market cap tops TRUMP's. By CoinDesk's figures it already has: $1.6 billion versus $615 million, or $4.8 billion versus $2.26 billion fully diluted.
Key facts
- Peak $190.81 within two minutes; low $3.70 inside an hour; $4.77 at one hour, ~98% off peak — CoinDesk/CoinMarketCap.
- Market cap ~$1.6B, FDV ~$4.8B, pooled liquidity $2.5M — CoinMarketCap.
- Arkham's early read: FDV up to $144B against a $48,000 liquidity pool.
- 100M tokens (10% of supply) to a project multisig seven days pre-launch; 15.5M to GSR; 14.5M to an unidentified address ~2 hours pre-open — BaseScan/Arkham.
The real-world read
A $1.6 billion "market cap" resting on $2.5 million of real liquidity is a paper number, not money anyone could withdraw — and the two data sources don't even agree on it, with Arkham's FDV running orders of magnitude above CoinMarketCap's. The more telling detail is the sequencing: a tenth of supply, plus market-maker allocations, moved days before ordinary buyers could trade. Pre-launch allocations to market makers are standard, and LAPTOP's docs reserve 20% for liquidity and operations — but the largest single transfer went to an address no one has identified. This is a celebrity-branded memecoin whose own burn rules gamify beating TRUMP, a token that took nearly a million wallets down a combined $3.8 billion. LAPTOP has earmarked part of its airdrop for wallets underwater on TRUMP — a tell as to who the buyers are expected to be.
