GnosisDAO votes to fold Gnosis Chain into Ethereum as a ZK rollup — no funding attached, no spec written

GnosisDAO has approved GIP-153, which retires Gnosis Chain's status as an independent Layer 1 and re-launches it as the first instance of the "Ethereum Economic Zone" — a ZK-proven rollup that settles on Ethereum. The result was announced on August 19 by the Gnosis Chain and Gnosis accounts, and amplified by a retweet from the Ethereum Foundation's account.

The margin was lopsided. Gnosis reported 123,158 votes for, 115 against and 151 abstaining, cast by 54 voters, against a 75,000 quorum. Gnosis put total turnout at 123,425; the three published line items sum to 123,424. The one-vote gap is unexplained and the DAO has not addressed it. On mechanics, Gnosis says the transition delivers synchronous composability with Ethereum mainnet: a contract on Gnosis Chain could call a mainnet contract and use the result inside the same atomic transaction, with no bridge in the middle. Gnosis claims no current L2 offers this. The chain's own state is meant to survive intact — addresses, balances and contract state carry over, xDAI continues to pay for gas, and Gnosis says nothing needs redeploying. The one thing that does not survive is the validator set, which Gnosis says will "sunset" as settlement security shifts to Ethereum's validators.

Critically, the vote moved no money. Gnosis stated plainly that no funds were requested and that the DAO has "aligned on a direction," giving engineering a mandate to design against it. Genesis is targeted for the turn of the year, with the full specification landing across 2027 — and the schedule is explicitly contingent on technical milestones at the Ethereum Economic Zone project, a separate effort.

The real-world read

Everything above the Snapshot link comes from Gnosis describing Gnosis. This is an announcement, not independent verification, and the technical claims — atomic cross-chain calls, zero redeployment — rest on a specification that by Gnosis's own admission won't be finished until 2027. A December-ish genesis for a system whose spec lands the following year is an aggressive framing of a mandate, not a shipping date, and Gnosis hedges it against another team's milestones.

"We will build with Ethereum, not on Ethereum" is positioning, not engineering. Fifty-four voters deciding the fate of a chain is a governance fact worth stating: quorum was cleared roughly 1.6x, but by a very small set of addresses.

The loudest silence is the validator sunset. Operators asked directly in the replies — "For us validating Gnosis. What do we need to do?" — and got no published answer. Neither the wind-down timeline, the treatment of staked GNO, nor what holders should expect was addressed in the announcement thread. A holder asking "What it means for GNO?" likewise went unanswered.

Opinion, and whose
