Galaxy commits up to $5M to prep Bitcoin for a quantum threat that doesn't exist yet

Galaxy has pledged up to $5 million in milestone-based developer grants and formed an advisory council to prepare Bitcoin for a future quantum-computing threat that experts agree does not exist yet.

Galaxy Digital, the crypto financial-services firm run by Mike Novogratz, has launched a Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative and committed up to $5 million in developer grants toward making the network resistant to a future quantum computer, according to The Block, which reported the launch on July 21.

The money is structured as milestone-based grants, not a lump sum. Galaxy said it will begin accepting applications immediately and will fund work on quantum-resistant transaction proposals, post-quantum signature schemes, wallet and custodian migration tools, and security audits of proposed implementations. Two other pieces round out the effort: an in-house research program and a Quantum Advisory Council to vet grant proposals. The council's inaugural members are Barry Sanders of the University of Calgary, Damien Bérubé of MIT Sea Grant, and Eran Tromer of Boston University, per The Block.

The technical premise: Bitcoin secures funds with elliptic curve cryptography, which a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could in principle break. Galaxy's own framing is that "no cryptographically relevant quantum computer exists today" but that the timeline to build one is "shortening" — a characterization attributed to the firm, not an independent finding. Galaxy points to external markers: NIST finalized its first post-quantum cryptography standards in 2024, and a U.S. executive order set a 2031 deadline for federal agencies to prepare their systems.

"There's a gap between the quantum computing world, which is moving fast, and the Bitcoin development world, which is just beginning to engage with post-quantum cryptography in earnest," said Galaxy's head of firmwide research Alex Thorn.

The real-world read

No quantum computer capable of breaking Bitcoin exists, and every party here agrees on that — Coinbase's April position paper explicitly said quantum computers pose no immediate threat. So this is preparedness, not a five-alarm fire, and the "shortening timeline" language is Galaxy's, an interested party that stands to gain reputational credit for leading the charge. "Up to $5 million" is also a ceiling, not a commitment; milestone-based grants mean Galaxy pays only as work is delivered. Worth watching whether the money actually flows.

That said, the substance is real and cheap to verify: BIP-360 and BIP-361 exist, the advisory names are checkable academics, and Galaxy has invited outside institutions to co-fund. This reads less as vaporware than as an established firm planting a flag on an issue Coinbase and Strategy have already staked out — the credit-claiming is the marketing, the grant terms are the news.
