The Foundation says it will treat that self-imposed deadline as "non-negotiable" at least until January 2027, when it plans to reassess quantum progress with outside experts. The date is not pegged to any confirmed timeline for "Q-day," the point at which a quantum computer could break current cryptography. The Foundation is explicit that Q-day's timing is "outside anyone's control," and that it is telling client teams to plan for it arriving as early as 2030 — a scenario it calls "a deliberately aggressive assumption," conceding that most credible estimates place Q-day later, some much later, "and we may never see it at all." It aligns its 2029 target with migration goals independently set by Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft.
The mechanics run through Ethereum's fork schedule. The Foundation says the plan requires an average cadence of 7.2 months per hardfork to reach full post-quantum readiness at a milestone labeled L*, five forks after the upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade (targeted for December 2026). An August 19 "Strawmap" update added a fallback: a "minimum viable post-quantum" milestone at J*, reachable on a slower 12-month cadence, meant to keep the chain "operating through Q-day with reduced guarantees" — a temporary safeguard, not full protection.
The immediately relevant fork is Hegotá, now being scoped. The Foundation frames it bluntly: "Hegotá is not the PQ fork; it is the fork that decides whether the PQ forks happen on time." Its two locked-in headliners are EIP-7805 (FOCIL, a consensus-layer inclusion-list mechanism) and EIP-8141 (Frame transactions, which give accounts a native route off vulnerable secp256k1 keys). The scoping process drew 62 proposed EIPs and roughly 60 researchers and engineers.

Read it as a statement of intent, not a shipped guarantee: the Foundation itself flags the 7.2-month cadence as "quite aggressive," admits the fork order after J* may still be reshuffled (K* and L* could swap), notes that researchers are "still defining" what MV-PQ's reduced guarantees even mean, and concedes Q-day may never arrive. The concrete, near-term deliverable is Hegotá's two headliners — everything past it is planned, not built.
