Coinbase Launches "Pre-IPO" Perpetual Futures, Starting With a SpaceX Contract

Coinbase is offering non-US traders a USDC-settled perpetual future that tracks SpaceX's implied private valuation, issued through its Bermuda entity and barred to US persons.

Coinbase says eligible non-US traders can now take leveraged bets on SpaceX's private valuation through a USDC-settled perpetual future — a product the company is building into a pipeline, and one it describes in its own promotional post.

Coinbase announced it is launching "pre-IPO perpetual futures," beginning with a contract referencing SpaceX, in a post on its corporate blog (date not stated). The product gives price exposure to a private company's implied valuation without any equity ownership, brokerage onboarding, or a public listing to trade against.

The mechanics, per Coinbase: the SpaceX Pre-IPO Perp is a USDC-settled perpetual futures contract that references "SpaceX's implied market valuation." It trades 24/7, has no expiry and no rollover, and settles all PnL in USDC. Coinbase says that when SpaceX completes an IPO, open positions "automatically rebase using the official outstanding share count" and the contract's price transitions to SpaceX's public stock price — with no action required from the trader.

Coinbase frames this as part of its "Everything Exchange" strategy and says more listings are planned "across technology, AI, energy, space, and beyond." No pricing, funding-rate detail, initial index level, or implied SpaceX valuation figure was disclosed in the post.

The offering is not for everyone — or for most Coinbase users. Per Coinbase's own disclaimers, the contracts are offered by Coinbase Bermuda Ltd., a Class F entity licensed by the Bermuda Monetary Authority, and are available only to eligible users in supported jurisdictions outside the United States. They are explicitly not available to US persons. Coinbase also states the product is "not affiliated with, sponsored, or endorsed by SpaceX."

The real-world read

Every fact here comes from a single source: Coinbase's own marketing post. There is no independent reporting, no third-party pricing, and no comment from SpaceX — which Coinbase confirms has nothing to do with the product. Treat the framing accordingly.

A few things the promo language soft-pedals but the disclaimers concede: this is a synthetic valuation bet, not exposure to SpaceX. The index tracks an "implied" valuation — Coinbase doesn't say who computes it, from what inputs, or how often, which is the entire risk of the instrument. Coinbase itself flags "elevated risks," "IPO conversion risk," "lower liquidity, higher volatility, and increased liquidation risk." The upbeat "the perpetual futures format you already know" sits awkwardly next to that. And the offshore Bermuda structure with a hard US ban is the tell on where this can legally live. What's conspicuously unsaid: no initial valuation, no fees, no funding mechanism, no launch metrics.

This is not financial advice.
