BitMine reported to have added $19 million in ether, with the 5%-of-supply claim resting on a single secondary report

Decrypt reports that Tom Lee's BitMine bought another $19 million of ether, lifting its stash toward 5% of total supply — a claim that arrives without a company filing or wallet data to check it against.

Decrypt reported on Monday, 17 August 2026, that BitMine — the ether-accumulating company chaired by Fundstrat co-founder Tom Lee — has bought a further $19 million of ETH, and that its total holdings are approaching 5% of Ethereum's supply. Decrypt styles the company "Bitmine."

That is the extent of what has been established. Decrypt's report does not identify a purchase date, an average price paid, a counterparty, a custodian, or the wallet addresses that would let anyone verify the position on-chain. No company press release, 8-K, or other filing has been cited alongside it, and BitMine has not published a holdings statement that corroborates the 5% figure. For a US-listed issuer, a treasury purchase of this kind would normally leave a paper trail; none has surfaced with this report.

The two numbers in the headline sit awkwardly together. Ethereum's circulating supply has been running in the neighbourhood of 120 million ETH, which puts 5% at roughly 6 million ETH — worth about $11.5 billion at the price on Decrypt's own ticker. A $19 million purchase at that price is on the order of 10,000 ETH, or under a fifth of one percent of the stated stack. The buy is a rounding error; the cumulative claim is the story, and the cumulative claim is the part with no receipt attached.

Key facts

  • Reported purchase: $19 million in ETH by BitMine — Decrypt, 17 August 2026, 15:47 UTC.
  • Reported cumulative position: approaching 5% of total ETH supply — Decrypt, same report; no ETH-denominated figure given.
  • ETH price at publication: $1,910.33; BTC: $64,119.00 — price ticker on Decrypt's page, a snapshot at that timestamp.
  • Implied scale (Cleartext arithmetic, approximate): ~6 million ETH ≈ 5% of a ~120 million supply; $19 million ÷ $1,910 ≈ 10,000 ETH.
  • Not disclosed in the report: purchase date, cost basis, custodian, wallet addresses, funding source.

The real-world read

Two things are conspicuously absent. First, the primary document: a treasury company's own filing or announcement is the only thing that turns "reportedly bought" into "bought," and Decrypt's report points to neither. Second, the cost basis. With ETH at $1,910, whether BitMine's accumulated position is above or below water is the single most relevant fact about it — and it is unstated. A headline that pairs a small confirmed-sounding purchase with a large unverified cumulative stake does flattering work for a company whose equity story is that stake. That framing should be treated as framing until BitMine files.

Opinion, and whose

No named analyst forecast or price target accompanies the report. The characterisation that the holdings are "nearing 5% of total supply" is Decrypt's own, not a figure attributed to BitMine or to an on-chain data provider — and Lee's accumulation rationale is not quoted.

Sources

  • Decrypt (secondary; 17 August 2026, 15:47 UTC) — the sole source for the $19 million purchase and the 5%-of-supply characterisation, plus the ETH and BTC prices quoted above from its price ticker. Decrypt does not name a primary source for either claim. Not marked as sponsored, but it is secondary reporting standing in for a filing that has not appeared.
