Bitcoin whales added 270,000 BTC in two weeks as U.S. ETFs logged a record $4.06B June outflow
Large bitcoin holders bought more than 270,000 BTC (about $16.7 billion) over two weeks in late June while U.S. spot ETFs shed a record $4.06 billion, per CoinDesk citing Bitfinex.
Two flows moved in opposite directions in late June, according to a CoinDesk report published July 3 that draws on a note from analysts at the crypto exchange Bitfinex.
U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $4.06 billion in outflows in June — their worst month since the funds listed, past the prior record of $3.56 billion set in February 2025 — pushing the products net-negative for 2026 for the first time. That streak broke Thursday (July 2) with a $221 million inflow, ending a 10-day run of outflows.
Over the same two weeks, large holders ("whales") accumulated more than 270,000 BTC, which CoinDesk valued at roughly $16.7 billion (implying a ~$61,850 average price; bitcoin was quoted around $62,458 in the piece). Bitfinex says the buying was not coming from U.S. spot desks: the spot premium, a gauge of domestic bidding, stayed negative through the accumulation. Bitfinex frames the institutions-selling-while-whales-buy split as a pattern "often seen near market cycle lows" — its characterization, not an established fact.
Among large-cap tokens, Solana was the outlier, up about 15% since early June, which Bitfinex attributes to protocol upgrades and a 120% jump in on-chain tokenized real-world-asset transfers, to $8.53 billion. Ethereum layer-2 tokens went the other way: Optimism and peers sit near record lows after Coinbase's Base network dropped Optimism's shared technology, removing a fee-capture argument for their value.

The real-world read The whale figures and the entire "cycle low" narrative come from Bitfinex, an exchange with a direct interest in a bullish bitcoin story — its own note, relayed by CoinDesk, is the only source for the 270,000 BTC and the "near past cycle lows" framing, so treat both as an interested party's read, not confirmed on-chain fact. The ETF outflow numbers are the harder, more verifiable data point here, and they cut the other way: record institutional selling. "Whales bought the dip" is unfalsifiable in the moment — the same divergence can precede a bottom or simply mark large holders catching a falling knife. Note also the reframing baked into the headline math: a "$16.7 billion" purchase sounds decisive, but it's the same 270,000-coin figure dressed in dollars. The one genuinely dry data point — a single $221M inflow after $4B out — is a rounding error, not a reversal.
