Bitcoin wallet dormant for 8 years moves 5,908 BTC, worth about $383 million

A bitcoin wallet dormant since December 2017 moved 5,908 BTC — worth roughly $383 million — to a new address on July 15, according to on-chain trackers; the coins have not moved since and no sale is confirmed.

A bitcoin wallet that had sat untouched since December 2017 transferred 5,908 BTC to a fresh address on Wednesday, July 15, according to on-chain analytics firm Lookonchain, which cited data from blockchain tracker Arkham. The Block reported the move; the underlying trace comes from public on-chain records.

The wallet, identified by its truncated address "138EM…ReyiT," sent the coins at 7:15 p.m. ET Wednesday, Lookonchain said. As of The Block's reporting, the bitcoin remained in the recipient address — it had been moved, not sold.

At bitcoin's price of $64,769 early Thursday, the stash is worth roughly $383 million. The wallet first received the 5,908 BTC in December 2017, when bitcoin traded around $16,800, making the holdings worth about $99.6 million at the time — so the position has appreciated close to fourfold on paper over nearly eight years.

The transfer is the second large reawakening in a week. The Block noted that earlier in the week another long-dormant whale moved roughly $188 million in BTC after more than seven years of inactivity. Bitcoin itself was little changed, down about 0.2% over 24 hours as of 2:30 a.m. ET Thursday, per The Block's price page.

The real-world read

An eight-year-old wallet moving is a verifiable on-chain fact. What it means is not. The Block notes that "market participants often view such transfers as potential precursors to token sales" — that is a read, not evidence. The coins went to a new address and have not touched an exchange; a wallet migration, custody change, or key rotation looks identical on-chain to the first step of a sell. The owner's intent isn't disclosed, and nothing here confirms a sale.

Worth flagging on provenance: the identification rests on a single analytics firm (Lookonchain) reading another firm's data (Arkham). Both are reputable, but wallet clustering and "OG whale" labels are inferences, not confirmations from the holder. And The Block, which carried the story, is majority-owned by Foresight Ventures — a crypto investor with Bitget as an anchor LP — per its own disclosures; it reports independently, but the tie is worth knowing.

Opinion, and whose

The only forward-looking claim is the market-participant view, relayed by The Block, that dormant-wallet awakenings can foreshadow selling. That is sentiment, attributed and unverified — not a prediction Cleartext endorses.
