Bitcoin ETFs post $517M day as the summer range finally breaks
US spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $517 million of net inflows on Aug. 19 and ether funds $189 million, per SoSoValue data cited by CoinDesk, as bitcoin cleared $69,000 and ether rose 18% to about $2,250.
US spot bitcoin ETFs took in $517 million on Aug. 19, the largest single-day net inflow since early May, while US spot ether ETFs pulled $189 million, their biggest day since October 2025. Both figures come from SoSoValue data cited by CoinDesk, which reported them in a live blog on Aug. 20.
The flows landed alongside a broad move in spot prices: bitcoin above $69,000 and ether up 18% to roughly $2,250, per the same CoinDesk update. Bitcoin had spent months capped below $64,000 while ETF flows turned gradually positive — CoinDesk frames Wednesday's move as the breakout that flow rebuild was pointing toward.
Outside the two majors, the day was small. XRP and Solana funds added modest inflows; the Hyperliquid product was the only one in redemption, at roughly $2 million. CoinDesk does not break out issuer-level numbers, so how much of the $517 million went to BlackRock's IBIT versus the rest of the field isn't stated.
CoinDesk also reports that bearish crypto positions lost a record $2.7 billion as bitcoin ran toward $70,000 — a liquidation cascade of the kind that fires when a long range breaks with leverage on the wrong side.

The real-world read
The ETF numbers are the solid part: SoSoValue aggregates issuer-published creations and redemptions, and same-day figures are preliminary until issuers post final NAVs. The $2.7 billion liquidation record is the softest number in the set — CoinDesk names no exchange or analytics provider for it, and liquidation totals are exchange-self-reported and routinely undercounted, so "record" should be read as a claim, not a measurement.
Note also that CoinDesk's live blog is doing double duty as reporting and as validation of its own prior "returning demand" call. That's the outlet's framing, not a fact about the flows. And the 18% ether move is given without a stated baseline or window — the implied prior level isn't published, so treat the percentage as CoinDesk's, uncorroborated.
Nothing here appears to be sponsored or issuer-promotional. But one day of buying is one day. Neither the durability of the bid nor any explanation for it — macro, rate expectations, a specific allocator — is established.
Opinion, and whose
CoinDesk: a single large inflow day confirms the breakout but not its durability; a second and third day at this scale would mark the sustained institutional bid absent since spring, while a quick reversal puts $64,000 back in play as support. That is the outlet's read, not an established outcome.
