bitcoin

Big wallets and ETFs both bought bitcoin this week. The price didn't move.

Santiment data cited by CoinDesk shows wallets holding 10 to 10,000 BTC added more than 20,000 coins since July 29, while U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs took in $754.69 million this week — with bitcoin still stuck below $65,000.

Two accumulation signals landed at once on Thursday, and neither has shown up in the price. Blockchain analytics firm Santiment, cited by CoinDesk, says wallets holding between 10 and 10,000 BTC have added more than 20,000 bitcoin since July 29 — roughly $1.2 billion at prevailing prices. Over the same stretch, U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETFs pulled in $754.69 million, according to SoSoValue data cited in the same report, putting them on pace for their best week since April.

Bitcoin was quoted at $64,304.11 in CoinDesk's report and has spent the period trading in a narrow band below $65,000.

The backdrop is legislative. The U.S. Senate will not vote on the CLARITY Act before its summer recess, with the vote slipping to September — a bill the industry has treated as the trigger for large-scale institutional allocation. CoinDesk reported XRP led major-token losses on that news.

The real-world read

Start with the label. "Whales" here means anything from 10 BTC up — about $640,000 at current prices. That band sweeps in mid-size holders, funds and exchange-adjacent wallets alongside genuine large holders, and Santiment's own phrasing bundles "whales and sharks." It is a broad cohort doing the work in a headline built on the word whale.

The arithmetic is loose, too. Twenty thousand BTC at the quoted $64,304 is closer to $1.29 billion; the $1.2 billion figure implies roughly $60,000 a coin. Small, but it's the number in the headline.

The two flow figures also sit awkwardly. The weekly ETF total is $754.69 million, while Kalchev describes "more than half a billion dollars so far in August" — reconcilable if the week straddles the month boundary, but the two aren't measuring the same thing and weren't presented that way.

Santiment's claim that the Coldcard hack is what drove small holders to sell is a correlation offered as a cause, with no on-chain link shown. And Nexo is a crypto lending and trading platform — its analyst is commenting on demand for the assets its business depends on.

Worth noting separately: CoinDesk's page carried a Binance-sponsored "case study" promoting the exchange's expansion into RWAs, payments and yield. That is marketing, not reporting, and none of it informs the above.

Opinion, and whose

Santiment: "the probability of $70K+ BTC becomes more and more probable compared to the likelihood of sub-$60K." A firm-branded forecast on X, not an established outcome.

Nexo's Liya Kalchev: the marginal buyer "looks more tactical than convicted," and a recovery narrative "likely needs a decisive close above $65,000."

Both are views from interested parties. Neither is a fact about where bitcoin goes next.
